Realtime Audio-Reactive VFX
This work specializes in creating audioreactive visuals for live concerts, combining an interest in music production with visual effects technology. The focus is on developing graphics that respond to audio in real-time, offering an alternative to pre-rendered video accompaniment.
Technical Approach
Using Touchdesigner as the main tool for both VFX creation and audio analysis, the setup runs on a PC with a dedicated GPU, enabling real-time performance of responsive visuals during concerts.
The process involves:
- Listening to the music and conceptualizing visual ideas
- Translating these ideas into VFX patterns in Touchdesigner
- Assigning values to be influenced by audio analysis
- Creating a unique visual profile for each song
- Controlling the visuals through a custom interface
Custom Interface
Using Touchdesigner, I created an interface so I can operate the VFX on-site. I can cue and crossfade between patches, with live monitoring of both the audio and the visual parameters.
Notable Projects
Visual productions have been created for:
- Close Talker
- Teen Ravine
- The Juno Awards
A significant project was the Close Talker Binaural 360 Audio Tour. This concert format, where audience members wore headphones for a spatially mixed audio experience, required adapting visual techniques to incorporate stereo panning information from the binaural mix.
Advantages of Real-Time Audioreactive Visuals
This approach allows for:
- Capturing spontaneous moments in live performances
- Maintaining perfect synchronization with the music, regardless of variations in live play
- Enhancing the overall audience experience
Future Perspectives
Anticipated developments include:
- Increased accessibility of high-quality visual performances
- Development of integrated solutions combining system controls, AI-generated visuals, and real-time audio reactivity
- Continued importance of human creativity and effort in high-level productions
Philosophy
Key emphases include:
- The importance of creativity in both content and presentation methods
- The role of systems integration and technical setups in enhancing live visual performances
